Reflections of Buenos Aires, AR

A few months ago, I jetsetted to the magical city of Buenos Aires to indulge in new experiences, culture, amazing food (I mean seriously, some of the best dishes I’ve had in my lifetime), and of course, lots and lots of Argentinian wine.

This trip was a bit of a milestone for me, as I went it alone. It’s always been a goal of mine to do this — to separate myself COMPLETELY from the familiar and channel that independent lady spirit that Julia Roberts made so attractive in Eat, Prey, Love or that Angela Bassett made so damn sexy in How Stella Got Her Groove Back.  Um, it didn’t go entirely like any of the above movies — not entirely — but needless to say, it was a TRIP. A 12-day trip of feeling every non-chemically-enhanced emotion from excitement, to fear, to bravery, to loneliness, to giddiness, to infatuation, to complete and utter AWE.  It was unforgettable.

While dining at a sushi restaurant my second night in, I met two men from Lady Gaga’s stage crew who were in town for a major concert of hers.  After trading details about how the heck we all ended up in a crappy sushi restaurant in the middle-of-nowhere BA, one of the gentleman said in regards to my adventure:  “Now here’s a woman with a story to tell.”  This made me smile inside. Whatever second-guessing I had done or apprehensions I had felt about trekking through another country by myself disappeared. I felt confident and right and unstoppable, and I take his words w/ me wherever I go.

The remaining 9 days of that trip were…well, a story to tell. Scenes below.

Solo trip + another stamp on the passport: CHECK!

Fiberglass Kisses.

Apologies for the dead air these past few months. I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus to travel and haven’t had much time to put new stuff up! That said though, a Buenos Aires post w/ more pics than you may care for is soon to follow.

As you may know, I’ve had the pleasure of working w/ producer extraordinaire, Freddie Joachim, for the past six years now (whoaaaa, time flies). He recently dropped his fourth full-length album, Fiberglass Kisses, that features the uber-talented Carlitta Durand, Miles Bonny, J. Mitchell, a remix by one of my fave UK producers Eric Lau, and…yours truly.

The serious cherry on top about this release is the limited, 300-run of clear RED vinyl — a must-have for vinyl collectors. I’m pretty sure they’re out by now, so you’ll be lucky if you can get your hands on a copy! If not, revel in this picture of mine :).

On One: SBTRKT

Last night, I checked a SBTRKT show for the first time. Mind = blown.

Everything about SBTRKT & Sampha is pure magic, but an important standout to me is that lyrically, Sampha is SO strong.  These two joints have particularly (and literally) been speaking to me lately, so I thought I’d throw them up here.  As it turns out, I’m wrapping up a track called “Ghosts,” so “Trials of the Past” is almost too close for comfort!

TRIALS OF THE PAST

So young so how were you to know know know.
You’re a carrier a carrier of the light inside of you.
Glows green in the pitch black night night night.
Can’t tell anyone anyone it’s hurting you.
So hold it in cover up, pull up your sheets your sheets.
What to be, down cruising in the ocean, and sin it’s due.
So I got to sit up, sit up up up.
For my heart to come down down down down down.
So I got to sit up, up up up up.
For my heart to come down down down down down.

The ghoulish entities they come floating through the walls.
Ghostly enemies they come floating through you door.

And the ghoulish entities they come floating through the wall.
From the past from the past and they’re somewhere right before you like The
Ghost of Christmas Past.

I was always floating around the city.
Go with the flow without ever knowing where I wanna be.
So I got into crazy situations.
A loyal soldier who acts who acts who acts. But never asks.
Why am I flying on my back, my back?
With the moon looking down down down down down.
Where’s my band? Where’s anything at all all?
And why’s the ceiling going black black black black black?

The ghoulish entities they come floating through the walls.
Ghostly enemies they come floating through you door.
And the ghoulish entities they come floating through the wall.
From the past from the past and they’re somewhere right before you like The
Ghost of Christmas Past.

Now, there’s not anything’s coming unless you go,
And you can’t break the chasing ghosts ghosts ghosts.
So much so. When they come back but never ask.
At your side, at your soul.
When they come back but never ask.

The ghoulish entities they come floating through the walls.
Ghostly enemies they come floating through your door.
And the ghoulish entities they come floating through the wall.
From the past from the past and they’re somewhere right before you like The
Ghost of Christmas Past.

NEVER NEVER

It’s complicated when you gravitate towards yourself.
On the other hand it’s hard to talk to anyone else.
You can’t help-can’t help where your mind goes.
So lets’ harvest on the moon with the autumn snow.

‘Cause I’ve never never had so much to gain and threw it all away.
And if I ever ever had the chance again I’d probably do the same.
Singing ooooh I’ve only let you down.
Singing ooooh I’ve left you the crown.

Open up open up to see your, see your face,
Watching yourself in your dreams like wide awake.
Hoping hoping you’ll return my calls.
Convince myself on my health that it’s not my fault.

‘Cause I’ve never never had so much to gain and threw it all away.
And if I ever ever had the chance again I’d probably do the same.
Singing ooh I’ve only let you down.
Singing ooh I’ve left you the crown.

No one ever had so much to gain or so much to lose.
No one ever had so much to gain or so much to lose.
No one ever had so much to gain or so much to lose.

If I ever had If I ever had if I ever had another…

See I’ve never never had so much to gain and threw it all away.
And if I ever ever had a chance again I’d probably do the same.
Singing ooooh I’ve only let you down.
Singing ooooh I’ve left you the crown.

See I’ve never never had so much to gain or had so much to lose.
And if I ever ever get past the shame and get through the bruises.

Singing oooh I’ll never let you down.
Singing oooh I never left the crown.

My muse(ings).

Well got damn. It’s been radio silence from me, hasn’t it? Lots of stuff has gone down in the last few months… love’s end, some travels to Tahoe, Austin, & Los Angeles, but most importantly, new beginnings — all of which you’ll be hearing about in upcoming tunes.  Hello, Spring :).

Last week, I flew home to LA to record a new joint w/ my buddy Erik Sanchez, bka to me as E.S.O.B. (Erik Sanchez On Bass), and I can’t wait to let you hear it! It’s that dirty type of funky, covered in all kinds of sass. Stay tuned for that.  Anyway, I flew in a day early so I could catch one of my favorite artists, Bilal, who was performing with the amazing Robert Glasper Experiment. I’ve always known about him, listened to a few of his tunes in the past, but once I saw him rock at the Gil Scott Heron tribute show in January, I became slightly obsessed. And watched this over…and over…and over. It’s actually on, right now,  as I type this. Anyway, I’ll leave ya’ll with it and hope you dig.

MTE + Waxpoetics + Me (your MC)

Calling all NYers & music lovers:

The More Than Enough fam is joining forces w/ one of my favorite labels, Waxpoetics, to bring you the video release party for Kendra Morris’ “Concrete Waves.” Ms. Morris is Waxpo’s best kept secret with a voice that’ll make you say “Damn! Ok, I’m listening…” and I’m a fan. Think Amy meets Adele meets Beth Gibbons, then check this track + the DJ Premier Remix here.  I was right, right?

Come thru Saturday to celebrate it’s release, and to watch me make an @$$ of myself on the mic as your host ;)! Is this thing on?

September 1, 2011

Skeme Richards & Elroy Jenkins will be speaking at The Notorious IBE in Heerlen, The Netherlands. Exhibiting several Hot Peas & Butta original works, as well as video and inspirations, they will be covering topics involving the ideas behind Hot Peas & Butta, the influences of cult/exploitation film, 60s/70s television, comics, and martial arts on bboy and hip-hop culture, and how the music is directly connected to those influences.

For more information about the numerous events, panels, and workshops going on at The Notorious IBE visit thenotoriousibe.com.

And of course Skeme Richards will be spinning throughout all 3 days.

I think they’ve hit a brick wall.

I’ve definitely been outta the sneaker game for a minute now. Or perhaps I was never in it.

When did Nike start doing this and WHY?

Ok, ok. While all of the SBs are pretty barfferific, I’m kinda sorta digging these Jordans. Or perhaps they’re just the lesser of all evils?
